Closet Organization
A few weeks after getting married, Brad and I redid my closet. It was originally wired shelving, and we wanted to upgrade this. We also wanted to provide me with drawer space within the closet. We found a unit at Home Depot that we really liked and installed it. This one here is very similar to the one I used. We then added some shelving and rods on the side. Below are some before and after shots of this upgrade:
Well two years later, my closet is messy and needs to be reorganized.
My biggest concern is my shoe problem. I have a lot of shoes just laying in the floor. I decided to look at Lowe's for a good shoe rack. I found one that is expandable and build on top of one another. I purchased 5 of them. The first thing I did after purchasing the shoe racks is completely cleaned out my closet. I wanted to start from scratch and make sure I had a nicely clean closet.
First I went through and organized all of my purses. My purses are placed on the very top shelf. I also placed my most used travel bags on this shelf as well.
Next I went through all of my clothes. They are in different groups and subgroups: dresses, t-shirts (short and long sleeve), work shirts (short, 3/4, and long sleeve), sleeveless tops, cardigans (short and long sleeve), work bottoms (skirts, pants, capris), and casual bottoms (jeans, capris, shorts). I went through each group one at a time and did two things: (1) I removed any clothes that were either too small or I no longer wore. If they were too small, I stored them in case I ever lose enough weight to wear them again. Everything else either went into a donation pile or was thrown away if it was not in good shape. (2) I color coded the hangers. This probably doesn't surprise people that know me. Dresses were given the black thin hangers, sleeveless shirts were given the black plastic hangers, and everything else is on white plastic hangers. As I went through each group, I hung the keepers back in the closet.
*Tip: I did this when we first upgraded my closet...Place your hangers on the rod backwards at first. As you wear things and rehang them, hang them properly. After a year, anything that is still backwards, get rid of. That means you went a whole year not wearing it!
Next I went through the cabinet and drawers. The cabinet has two cloth bins in it which houses my swimsuits. I got rid of anything that I no longer wore. Same goes for the drawers. I also refolded things that were just thrown in a drawer. I actually found a few pair of socks that I thought were missing! The shelf between the cabinet and drawers houses my jewelry boxes. I also went through those and reorganized.
Finally, we are down to my shoes. The shoes are what caused this whole reorganization to even happen, and finally we are ready to organize those. I put together the shoe racks and placed two shoe racks under my dresses since those are longer, then I placed three shoe racks under my cardigans. I went through all of my shoes, and I am donating about 12 pairs. The rest were added to the shoe rack. They were grouped by color and style. So heels were all under my dresses. Flats, sandals, and tennis shoes were under the cardigans. I did not have room for all of my flip flops so those went under my drawers. I also left my house shoes and boots in the floor.
The closet to me looks 100% better and a few weeks later, I am still keeping things organized. I hope this might inspire your closet reorganization!
