Taco Mama

Taco Mama

So I have been meaning to write this post for quite a while. I honestly kept forgetting about it. “Reviewing” restaurants hasn’t been as much of a priority to me the last year because it is hard with a two year old to have time to take pictures of food. I am lucky to eat my food before it is half cold, ha! So back when we were living at a hotel during our kitchen renovation, we were staying right across the street from Taco Mama. It is fairly new on our side of town, and I had yet to try it. I know many people who rave about it, so I really wanted to eat there. One night we finally had dinner there.

I had to try their margarita. I wanted to try the watermelon but it wasn’t in season. Looking back I should have gotten a frozen one, but on the rocks was pretty good too. I think a pitcher would be great if we ever went back with friends who drank (Brad doesn’t drink). It wasn’t too strong, but the alcohol wasn’t lacking either.

At our Taco Mama, we were slightly confused about the water (neither of us ordered fountain drinks so it could be the same for this too). They didn’t give us cups when we ordered. Instead there were cups near the fountain itself. It was our first time and we were just unaware.

I opted to build my own tacos. I ordered mine with a crispy shell and beef as my meat. I also added lettuce, cheese, pico de Gallo, and sour cream. It came with chips and salsa, and I picked queso as my side. My tacos were really great. I am always skeptical on beef tacos. I love them but not everyone has great flavored beef to me. But this were really good. I also loved that you could do so many various toppings. Next time I will go a bit crazier, but I wanted to do things I knew I liked. The salsa and queso were also both really great. The chips weren’t overly salty, and both the queso and salsa had the right amount of spice without burning your mouth alive, ha!

Brad opted to order The Sizzler taco basket. He did ask to do one soft flour shell and one crispy shell (which they easily accommodated). The Sizzler has grilled steak, lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, red chile butter sauce, and queso fresco. Like me, he chose queso as his side to go with his chips and salsa. He really preferred the soft flour shell over the crispy one. But he really enjoyed his meal overall. The steak was tender and all of the toppings worked really well together. [I am honestly surprised he ate all of those toppings seeing how he is a burger with ketchup only kind of guy.]

We haven’t been back, but that is solely because of its location to our house and Brad’s hatred for Mexican food. But I cannot wait to take our friends there sometime. I really enjoyed it, and it’s a nice inexpensive Mexican place without feeling like Taco Bell!
