DIY Pigeon Costume
During Red Ribbon Week, Melody wanted to dress up as Pigeon as her favorite book character. I did some researching, and I opted to go the blue jacket route. It seemed the simplest. The hardest part for me was finding the right colored blue jacket locally. But thankfully I found one at Target that seemed to work. I had black and yellow felt on hand, and I bought some white felt.
To start, I cut out circles of both the black and white felt. I traced it using things I had already at home. I made the black circle smaller than the white, of course, since it’s his eyes. If you look up pictures of Pigeon, he has black around his eyes. So I added that with a black sharpie. Then I glued the black onto the white using felt glue. The black part is NOT supposed to be centered with the white.
I measured the jacket, and I cut out the white color from white felt. Then I also added the black lines using a sharpie. Lastly, I used the yellow felt and cut out two triangles to be the beak.
I put all the supplies in the box including scissors, a sewing needle, white and blue thread, and straight pins. One evening during dance class, I assembled it as much as I could.
I got the beak sewed on, then I added the eyes using the straight pins.
Once home, I sewed on the eyes and collar. I did really large stitching to avoid lots of tiny holes so that I could re-use the jacket if I wanted. Then Melody tried it on the next morning and loved it.
Melody also wanted to include a hotdog since her favorite book is “The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog”.
