WellieWisher Doll Beds

WellieWisher Doll Beds

Many months ago, Melody and Brad came up with the idea to make beds for her WellieWisher dolls. This actually became a thought before Christmas last year as a potential gift idea. After much trial and error and brainstorming, we finally finished it a few weeks ago.

Brad found the design on here. It took quite a few prints to make it come out perfectly. He ultimately had to rescale both the headboard and footboard to 85%. We let Melody decide the colors of the beds. She picked red and pink. Once he printed them, we had to find a good way to connect the headboard and footboard. We found dowel rods that fit perfect at Lowe’s. He used his Dremel to cut them into the length he wanted. They I used super glue to permanently attach the rods to the frames.

Now we had to figure out the mattress portion of the bed. Brad wanted something foam based. I originally thought about a mattress topper, but I couldn’t really find anything. Then after a visit to Hobby Lobby, I found some foam chair pads. They were obviously too big, but I was able to cut them in half, and they fit perfectly.

Now came all of my work…making sheets and a pillow. First, we let Melody pick out the material. She wanted rainbows and unicorns. Both were made of different material, which made things slightly difficult, but I made it work!

When it comes to the sheets, I don’t plan on giving out measurements. I didn’t do any sewing for the sheets. So I literally just made it fit and used glue and pins. So I literally marked the fabric after wrapping it around the foam. I basically “wrapped it like a present”. Also - iron the fabric and leave yourself some extra room to be sure and cover all of the foam.

After the fabric is cut and ironed, I now attach it to the mattress. Like I said above, I wrap it like a present. I first pulled up the sides and attached using pins. Then I folded the ends up like I would with a present using pins. Once I like the way it looked, I used fabric glue so that I could remove most of the pins. I left some of the pins on the ends because it was just easier that way. I tried to make sure they were placed inside in such a way they could not come out during play.

After making the fitted sheet, I now needed to make the flat sheet. I cut out a rectangle that was around 14.5 inches by 19 inches. This left room for the hems. All the hems were folded at half an inch except the top. I did a 2 inch hem. I was sure to iron the hem before sewing it.

And the last thing was a pillowcase. The measurements were 14.5 inches by 5 inches. I once again ironed it, then sewed it inside out for the most part. Think home economics in high school. However, the material was difficult on the unicorns. So I used fabric glue to finish it off. For stuffing, I opted to use toilet paper. We bought some super cheap toilet paper way back during the toilet paper shortage, so it is perfect for a doll’s head, ha.

And here is the final product! She loves it, and they turned out so adorable! It was definitely a team project.
