Goat Feathers

Goat Feathers

While at the beach back in July, we tried Goat Feathers on 30A. We had actually planned on eating at a different restaurant on that evening, but they had live music inside and it was really loud. So we passed and found this restaurant. It was just the three of us, and it was fairly early. I had read some decent reviews prior, so we thought we would give it a try.

To start, you park in the back of the restaurant. We saw signs for this, so I wasn’t completely surprised. However there are two “entrances”. One is to the left of the building from the back (or the right of the building if you are in the front). That is the entrance to the restaurant. Then on the rights side of the building from the back is another entrance, but this is to the shrimp market. I will discuss that some at the end of this post because we did try that too on another night. A neat aspect of the back of the building are the windows. They actually have waterfalls built into the window which is neat. Not too much of a view from what I could see though. But we didn’t sit at those tables.

Once inside the building you have a few options. The restrooms are to the right down a hallway. They do have an elevator inside of the door as you can see below. Or you can take the stairs up to the actual restaurant.

There wasn’t really a wait when we arrived. There was one couple in front of us that requested a specific table. Once they got them situated, we were seated almost immediately. However not long after we were seated, it was packed. So first off, below are both the happy hour menu (not the best picture), and the kids menu. You can find the regular menu on their website. I did take pictures of it, but the lighting was awful. Melody didn't end up ordering anything because there wasn’t anything she would really eat. They do have a great happy hour menu if you find things on it you want to eat, but we opted for other items.

Brad ordered the pan seared scallops with cajun potatoes. The scallops were really good and cooked perfectly. The potatoes however were not great at all. They were overcooked, and the cajun seasoning really wasn’t all that great. I ordered the crab lovers platter with cheese grits. I really ordered this for crab claws, but I do like all of the other entree items that came with it. The crab claws were good, but those are really hard to mess up. The snow crab was decent. It was slightly overcooked, but that is easy to do with crab legs. The soft shell crab was ok. I am not a huge fan of soft shell crab personally, but I did give it a try. Much like the crab claws, it is hard to really mess it up. The crab cake was the worst of the 4 items. It was dry and bland. And the sauce they give you to add yourself wasn’t great either. I did ask for tartar sauce because that is what I prefer, but it still didn’t help. But the tartar sauce went great with the hushpuppies! And the cheese grits were absolutely AWFUL. First, I didn’t really get any cheese taste from these grits. And the grits were dry and hard. It was literally like eating sand. I took two bites. One from the top, one from the middle. Neither were good.

So overall, this was nothing spectacular. While the entrees themselves were decent, it was nothing out of the ordinary. And they did not make up for the awful side dishes. I would not go out of my way to eat here again. If someone wanted to eat here, I wouldn’t say no, but I would not spend quite as much money on the food as we did this trip. I would order something more basic like fried shrimp and fries. I feel like you can’t mess that up, ha.

So now the shrimp market. I didn’t get pictures of the food or anything, but we did get steamed shrimp from here one evening. On their facebook page, it said they also offered corn and potatoes that were cooked, but they did not. You could buy them to cook, but we didn’t have time for that. So instead we simply got steamed shrimp, tuna dip, and cocktail sauce. All of those things were really good, and I would not be opposed to getting stuff from the shrimp market here again.
