San Angel Inn
I had dinner at San Angel Inn on our recent trip to Disney World with mom. I have always wanted to eat here just because of how pretty it always looked to me. I also love Mexican food. I was a bit hesitant based on the menu, but we decided to be adventurous and try it anyway.
We arrived a little before our reservation at 7:15 p.m. We waited about 15 minutes at most before being seated. I was a little disappointed with the seating. I would have preferred to be closer to the water, but I didn't want to create a fuss to be moved. The tables are also EXTREMELY close together. I find this to be a trend at most Disney World restaurants. I always feel like I am part of everyone's conversation that sits around me. This can be really frustrating when you are at a table of two and are crammed between two larger tables and have a bag or purse you need to find somewhere to store. Oh well! On to the food!
We started out with chips and salsa. They had spicy red salsa and mild green salsa. The chips were really good and tasted fresh. They did not taste like chips from a bag like I had read on some other reviews. The spicy red salsa was pretty good, but my favorite was the mild green salsa. We liked it so much, we asked for extra. My only complaint about the chips and salsa is how tall the container is. It is really hard to share and make room for other dishes at such a small table.
Since we were in Mexico, we decided to try out a margarita. I ordered the Hibiscus Margarita, and my mom ordered the Passion Fruit Margarita. The Hibiscus Margarita was WAY, WAY too strong for me. I felt like it was almost 100% tequila. It was not good at all. I like a strong drink, but I don't want to feel like I am drinking pure alcohol. I think I drank about 1/8 of it. It was really a waste of money for me, sadly. The Passion Fruit Margarita was better, but it had too much of a mango flavor for me. It was the opposite of mine in that I felt like there was little alcohol in it. Mom did finish it, however.
For food, mom and I ended up going the appetizer route. None of the entrees on the menu sounded appetizing. The menu varied slightly from the menu found online. Looking back, I should not have been as adventurous and just ordered tacos or enchiladas, but I wanted to be different. Also, I took pictures of the menus, but the lighting was so bad they did not turn out good.
Our first appetizer was queso fundido. Based on the description, I expected this to be a runnier cheese, almost like queso at a normal restaurant. We were wrong. It is melted cheese, but not runny at all. You cannot dip chips into this. We scooped it into the tortillas provided, and ate it like a cheese taco. It was actually really good even though it was not what we expected.
Our "main" appetizers were the Empanadas de Chorizo con Queso Chihuahua and Quesadillas Rebozadas. I ordered the Empanadas. I had never had them before at any Mexican restaurant. They were pretty good. I almost finished one of the two that came with it. It was really dry and could use a sauce or something to dip it in. My mom ordered the Quesadillas, and they were awful. I personally would not try them, but mom had one bite and did not eat any more. I do not like mushrooms, so I knew I would not like those. They were not your ordinary quesadillas you would order at a Mexican restaurant.
Overall, I do not plan to eat here again. It would take a drastic menu change to warrant my return. The chips and salsa were amazing, but that isn't enough for me to return and spend so much money! I have heard many people having the same complaints as I do, so hopefully there will be a change one day.
